Hot off the Press – New Titles this week
Published on 17 February 2025 by
This week 282,566 pages have joined the archives from ten Titles. We have added one new title and augmented our holdings of a further nine titles extending coverage from the 1810s and 1990s.
New to the Archive this week is the Folkestone Daily News 1910-1914. The title, which shows evidence of extensive handling before being microfilmed and subsequently digitised, joins three other Folkestone titles in the Archive. The four titles combined cover the history of the harbour town from 1855 to 1999.
In our updates to the Archive this week we are particularly delighted to be able to bring a substantial number of new years and pages to the Evening News, adding new material from 1915 to 1980.
A pioneer of ‘new journalism,’ the Evening News was once the largest selling evening newspaper in London, starting life as the first popular evening paper in London. This update completes the important First World War years, during which the paper was one of London’s most circulated newspapers.
Beyond this, the Evening News captures the daily news from the English capital up until 1980. This release also unlocks the iconic Moomin comic strip, created by Finnish artist Tove Jansson. The Evening News, in 1954, became the first paper in the world to publish the comic.
