We work hard to ensure that the text presented to you is as accurate as it possibly can be, but errors do happen.

When we digitise newspapers, we run Optical Character Recognition (OCR). What this means is that computers essentially read and identify the article text. The OCR process can produce errors, with the layout and quality of the newspaper image also impacting how good the quality of the generated text is.

We are constantly improving the quality of our OCR text by running the text from our newspaper archive through a rolling corrections process. Once completed, we start again, meaning that we are quite literally always improving the text of our articles.

Correcting errors

You can, however, correct any errors you come across. Whilst in the newspaper image viewer, simply select ‘Articles,’ which will display all of the articles on the newspaper page. Select the article you would like to make corrections to and then choose the specific line of text to edit it.

Once you have made your corrections, press save. Your corrections will then be added to the search index.
