What are clippings, collections and workspaces?

The British Newspaper Archive offers a variety of ways to structure and share your research, through clippings, collections and workspaces.

Clip and save your findings

The British Newspaper Archive’s clipping tool allows you to clip and save your discoveries. Accessible via our newspaper viewer, simply choose the ‘Clip and save’ option to clip either the full page or a specific article.

After clipping your selection, you can choose to download, print or even share the image. Our sharing function allows you to share your clipping via a link, which you could choose to post on social media or to update friends and family through email. 

You can also add your clippings to a collection or a workspace.

Curate your findings with collections

Collections are made up of clippings, and are unique compilations dedicated to a particular topic or project. They can help you keep your findings organised in the form of a personal online library.

Collections are accessible via the newspapers tab on the homepage. Here you can browse your own collections, alongside publicly browsable collections, made by other users, which include the British Newspaper Archive, Findmypast and partners of The Archive.

You can choose whether your collections are private or publicly available, and you can also share them with family and friends. Within your collection, you can add a description of the items you have curated, and switch between a grid or mosaic view as you browse through your clippings.

Organise your research with workspaces 

Workspaces allow you to bring multiple collections together. They are an area to organise your research, with an opportunity to add folders and sub-folders. Here, you can also add your own notes and observations, as well as annotating your discoveries.

Workspaces can be reached through the ‘My research’ tab on the homepage. In case you need some inspiration for getting started, you can find example workspaces curated by the British Newspaper Archive in this area.

Workspaces are your own private space to store your research. All legacy bookmarks and saved searches from the old British Newspaper Archive site have been preserved and moved into workspaces.
